In Proteus I guessed that there was a lot of sub-surface water, especially in the southern hemisphere. Resently, a European probe, Mars Express, using ground penatrating radar has found an amazing amount of water ice under the Martian south pole.

More recently, scientists believe there were once oceans on Mars, some as large (relative to the size of the planet) as the Pacific. These determinations come from deformation of features that look like coastlines thought to have been caused by large displacements in planetary mass and subsequent changes in the planet's spin axis.
