Double Jeopardy is the first in a new series of science-fiction novels by new author Michael Morris. It is also the first book to be published by the new small publishing house Talisman Publishing.
The series is set aboard a highly advanced star ship that is capable of travelling through not only time and space, but also the barriers between parallel universes. This ship has been buried beneath the surface of a campsite, undisturbed since the last ice age but now discovered and unwittingly activated by a group of eight children and young adults. In this first adventure the group are transported into a parallel world inhabited by Elves, Orcs and evil wizards, where they must help an old emperor locate his missing daughter.
As the series continues, the reader will join Lynnette and her friends as they discover the terrifying events that led to the ship’s crash landing on Earth, and the fate of the original crew. What dark secrets are hidden in the rooms and corridors of the vessel? The young crew will have to find out if they are to survive and return home alive.
Double Jeopardy should generally appeal to all fans of science-fiction, but in particular those who are interested in Doctor Who and the Cloud Nine television series The Tribe. There are also elements that appear later in the series that may remind readers of certain sci-fi horror films, but to mention them here may give away future story lines.

“Hermione lay awake in bed. It was 3am, and for the third night on the run she was hearing strange noises from beneath the house. They did not seem to be coming from the ground floor, they sounded too far away for that. It was more like they were coming from the basement, but that was impossible. The house didn’t have a basement. Hermione lay on her side, her duvet wrapped tightly around her, and listened to the odd sounds. It was a low, muffled, whining noise that seemed to alternate in pitch between loud and soft. Hermione groaned. She was not going to get any sleep while this was going on. Throwing back the duvet, she swung her feet over the side of the bed and sat up, thrusting her feet into her slippers. She got up and crossed the bedroom, opening the door and stepping out onto the landing without switching on any of the lights. At this time of night everyone in the house would be asleep, and she didn’t want to wake anyone. She crept across the landing and tiptoed down the stairs.”
A science-fiction fantasy adventure for children of 8 years and over, Hermione Applegate & The Secret Under the House tells the story of an ordinary 15-year-old schoolgirl. Hermione is living an ordinary life and working towards her GCSE’s when strange things suddenly start happening. First, she starts hearing strange noises in the middle of the night. Noises that seem to be coming from underneath the house. Then she finds a mysterious remote control underneath a cabinet in the living. A remote control that doesn’t seem to belong to anything the family owns. Next, some sinister looking men appear in the school, asking questions about a new girl in Hermione’s class, and Hermione’s best friend starts behaving oddly. Are these incidents connected? Hermione intends to find out.

“The noise was a little louder down here, but it was still muffled. It still seemed to be coming from somewhere lower down, beneath her feet. Hermione walked along the hall into the kitchen and peered round, straining her ears for any kind of clues as to where the noise was coming from. Perhaps it was outside? Returning to the hallway, she carefully opened the cupboard under the stairs and groped around on the key hooks for the backdoor key. Then she went back into the kitchen and unlocked the door, stepping out into the cold night air. Outside, the noise was even fainter than ever. It was not coming from out here, it was definitely somewhere inside the house. She went back in and locked the door again. Resigned to the fact that she was not going to be able to solve this mystery, she returned to bed. She lay awake for some time listening, before finally slipping off to sleep.” |
