Here is an amazing story about the latest Blastocyst Stem cell bill, which will be sent to the President, but doesn’t have a veto proof majority. The most amazing things about this story are the following excerpts:

First is this statement:

“He also said a recent report by the U.S. Catholic Conference listed numerous breakthroughs involving research conducted on adult stem cells, cord blood and amniotic fluid, none of which involve the destruction of a human embryo.”

The Catholic Church is telling scientists how to do research. They presume to suggest the routes that should and should not be followed. This is a little reminiscent of society’s approach to astronomy in the time of Copernicus.

Second, this statement:

"You're talking about spare embryos now but if it ever did work ... it would require the killing of millions of embryos," said Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J.

Here it sounds as if they’re really afraid that Bastocyst Stem cell research will work! Imagine that. Perhaps this is the real reason that these groups appose it….

We must hope that soon the Pope his cardinals and as many neo-cons as possible will develop illnesses that could be treated with stem cell technology. This all goes back to what one thinks one is. I don't see an embryo as a conscious being.
